You will need two things in order to mine sand.

1-Achieve GM miner status, or use some of the special mining gloves (occasional prizes that are awarded for bulk order deeds) so your mining skill is at least 100. Only a GM miner can read the book, also if after having read the book your mining falls below GM you wont be able to mine sand until you raise mining back up to GM status.

2-Read the book "Finding Glass Quality Sand"

This book can presently only be bought in the new lands of Ilshenar from gargoyle shopkepers in the Gargoyle city. Now if you donīt have UO3d or Black thorns revenge (the latter is scheduled for release some time in 2002) there is hope! I myself cant run UO3d, so I was in the same boat, but I went to www.tradespot.net and asked if anyone could sell me the books at 20k each, I later have found several vendors or more than 1 shard which sell the books for 15k to 22k. Even if you donīt have UO3d getting your hands on a each of the books should not be a problem.

3-Grab some shovels and head out to a beach, or desert. Basically any place there is a sand tile will work.

You will have to dig several times in between each "unit" of sand you successfully mine up. They are not stackable so there is a serious limit on how many your going to be able to store, on the plus side though, they only weight 1 stone each so you will be able to easily carry and transport any sand that you mine up.
